Important errata for "Megawats and Megatons" as published October 2001 by Alfred A. Knopf.:

On page 217, the title of Table 8.4 should read: (corrected version)

"TABLE 8.4. CONCEIVABLE HARNESSABLE ENERGY FLOWS,
WORLDWIDE. TERAWATTS (1 TW = 30 QUADS PER YEAR)

And the 7th line from the bottom on page 217 should read:

"... flows might conceivably contribute 90 TW. The Department of Energy..."

The table and text previously referrred to "quads per year" and thus understated these energy flows by a factor 30 .A reader at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory first reported this error in July, 2002. I apologize for the error and for not having posted it sooner. The University of Chicago paperback edition of "Megawatts and Megatons: The Future of Nuclear Power and Nuclear Weapons," published January 2003 has the correct version.

On Page 233, about 7/10th of the way down the page, the sentence should read, " (corrected version)

"...world used 375 quads of energy in 1996; the United States used 75. We have noted in Table 8.4 that solar electric power conceivably could amount to about 1500 quads per year worldwide; fuel from biomass, 600 quads; and 270 quads from exploiting the temperature difference between the warm surface water of the oceans and the colder water at depth. Biomass, in particular, may develop..."

This error was reported to me by Colin H. West on April 13, 2003.
